The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has reminded heads of primary and secondary school examination centres that the extended period for normal candidate registration ends on June 30.

Thereafter, late registration will commence for the month of July. This will attract a surcharge of 100% for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), and 50% for both the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

According to a press release issued June 25 by UNEB Executive Director Dan N. Odongo, the total fees for late registration will be sh 68,000 for PLE, sh 246,000 for UCE, and sh 279,000 for UACE.

“UNEB does not expect any government-sponsored candidate under UPE, USE, or UPOLET to register during the late registration period, as they were required to register during the normal period,” the release states.

Heads of centres are advised to utilise the remaining time to ensure all learners in candidate classes are duly registered so that no eligible student misses this year’s examinations.

To date, a total of 1,527,867 candidates have registered across all three levels. Compared to last year’s candidature of 1,416,448, this represents a 7.3% increase in enrollment.

Warning against surcharges

The Board has cautioned school heads and directors against charging fees outside the prescribed UNEB rates and labelling them as UNEB fees.

This is a serious offense under Section 33 of the UNEB Act, CAP 259. It attracts a fine of forty million shillings, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both.

Additionally, the Board will withdraw examination centre status from non-compliant schools. If the convicted individual is a registered teacher, they will be de-registered in accordance with relevant laws.

Aggrieved parents and members of the public who have been charged exorbitant fees disguised as UNEB registration dues are urged to report the matter to the nearest police station.

Amendments and verification

Schools are also informed that data amendments can still be made if errors are identified. Administrators should download and fill out the amendment form on their school portals, then return it to UNEB before the registration period closes.

Following the close of registration, schools must display candidate registers in accessible locations on their premises. This will allow candidates and parents to confirm registration status and verify data accuracy.

UNEB will also provide an SMS option for data verification. The specific dates for the display exercise will be communicated by UNEB in due course.
