Soroti city authorities have been directed to ensure that teachers occupying classrooms at Moruapesur Primary School vacate the rooms to create space for learners.

The directive follows a monitoring visit by the Resident District Commissioner’s Secretariat in the Office of the President, which found six teachers using classrooms as accommodation.

The situation has left learners overcrowded, with more than 67 pupils reportedly sharing a classroom designed for about 55 learners.

The school administration said the teachers moved into the classrooms because of inadequate staff accommodation. Others are sharing the few available staff houses, while three teachers commute from their homes.

Headteacher Caroline Aero said the school had tried to raise money from parents to address some of its needs, including a proposed PTA contribution of sh5,000 per pupil per term, but the response had been poor.

During the monitoring visit, deputy head of the RDC Secretariat, Dr Sr Mary Grace Akiror, said using classrooms as accommodation compromises the learning environment and denies pupils adequate space.

She urged the District Education Officer and the RDC to ensure teachers find alternative accommodation so that classrooms can be returned to their intended use.

The situation highlights the wider challenge of inadequate staff accommodation in schools, with some teachers continuing to use classrooms as living quarters as they await the construction of additional staff houses.
