Several inmates at several prisons around Uganda are among the best students who excelled in the 2025 national Primary Leaving Education (PLE).

A total of 807,313 candidates, among them inmates at Luzira, Mbarara, Mbale and Soroti prisons, wrote their exams at 15,388 centres across the country.

Uganda Prisons authorities report that a total of 313 candidates were registered across the country. Of these, 280 sat the exams, while 19 had been released by the time the exams were conducted.

Earlier today, prison authorities posted on social media with the report from the different facilities stated that 15 candidates got Division One, 159 got Division Two, 75 got Division Three, and 31 got Division Four, showing an improved performance at their schools.

Presiding over the release of the exam results on Friday, Mrs Janet Museveni, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, commended the Prisons administrators for providing the inmates an opportunity to further their education as they serve their sentences.

"I firmly believe, as I am sure others do, that giving this opportunity is an impactful way of rehabilitating the inmates. The education they acquire should enable them to integrate back into society easily and more profitably, and reform into better citizens, " said the minister at the events she hosted at State House Nakasero in Kampala.

Out of the 807,313 candidates who sat for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) around the country, over730,000 (90.4%) attained the required scores to join secondary schools.
