SOROTI - Soroti University is mourning the death of the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Percival Christopher Egau, who passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 7, at the age of 79.

The university announced his death in a statement posted on its official social media platforms. “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Prof. Egau,” the university spokesperson, Juma Hassan Nyene, said.

Speaking to New Vision Online, Nyene said Prof. Egau died at Entebbe Grade B Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.

“He has been under the care of his personal doctor in Entebbe. He had been ill for some time,” Nyene said, but declined to disclose the illness that has claimed Egau's life.

Family members, however, said the veteran academic had been battling liver cancer for several years and had previously undergone treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

His sister-in-law, Dr. Rita Florence Matte, said the disease had advanced despite sustained medical intervention.

“He has been with me for the last two months as doctors tried everything they could to save his life, but the cancer had spread throughout his body. He passed away at 12:40am on July 7,” Matte said.

Born in Serere District, Prof. Egau was widely respected for his contribution to engineering education and higher learning in Uganda.

During his tenure at Soroti University, he played a key role in developing the institution's engineering programmes and mentoring young engineers.

The university described him as a dedicated academic and administrator whose commitment to excellence and service had left an enduring legacy.

Prof. Egau is survived by his wife and three children, all of whom live and work in the UK.

According to Dr. Matte, the deceased had been living in Uganda while his wife stayed in the UK with their children.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, pending the arrival of his wife and children from the UK.
