KAMPALA - Uganda on Thursday (July 2) officially flagged off its first consignment of processed meat to the Ethiopian market, marking a significant milestone in the country's agro-processing and export sector.
The inaugural 20-tonne shipment was flagged off at the headquarters of Ranchers Finest Limited in Kawempe.
Speaking during the ceremony, the company's Chief Executive Officer, Collin Muyanja, called on livestock farmers and stakeholders in the meat value chain to seize the opportunity by increasing production and embracing value addition to meet the growing export demand.
Muyanja noted that the venture will create more jobs for Ugandans, with over 200 people already employed in meat processing at the company.
He added that the exports will be transported by air using both Uganda Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines, creating additional business opportunities for the aviation sector.
He described the first shipment as a pilot export, expressing confidence that consistent supply and quality would open doors to more international markets.
Muyanja also revealed that the company is producing tinned meat locally, a move expected to reduce imports and save the country foreign exchange.
