Uganda Airlines is set to commence four weekly flights to Accra, Ghana next Tuesday (October 27) in its efforts to strengthen East-West African connectivity.

The national carrier will operate the service between Entebbe International Airport and Kotoka International Airport in Accra via Lagos, Nigeria, using a wet-leased Boeing 737-800 from Ethiopian Airlines.

The route builds on Uganda Airlines’ existing five-times-weekly service to Lagos. In an exclusive interview with New Vision in August, acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake noted major changes to the airline's schedules starting in October.

“We are changing the schedule completely as of October 1, so that all flights come into Entebbe at the same time and distribute traffic within Africa. All the long-haul flights will come in and feed into African connections, and at night the African connections will come in the next morning and feed into the London, Bombay and Dubai flights. So, we are building connectivity,” he said.

“The two countries have a lot in common. A lot of families have connections. It is a natural place for us to go,” Wake said.

The Accra service makes Uganda Airlines the fourth East African carrier to serve the Ghanaian capital, after Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Air Tanzania.

It also strengthens the carrier’s existing West African presence in Lagos and Abuja.
