The cricket fever is set to grip Soroti City as the Soroti Cricket Academy gears up to host the much-anticipated Girls' Cricket Week from May 5th to 11th.

Teams are expected to arrive at St Mary’s Girls SS on Saturday 4, and thereafter, draws will be held.

A seven-day contest at the Soroti cricket grounds will witness an exciting display of talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship as the 16 selected schools across the country compete for the coveted title.

The Girls Cricket Week is not just a tournament, it’s a celebration of the growing presence of girls' cricket in Uganda. With each passing year, more young girls are taking up the bat and ball, showcasing their skills.

The championship being fronted by Soroti Cricket Academy will feature sixteen schools from six different regions.

The schools that will feature in the tournament are Light SS, St Mary’s Girls SS Madera, Olila High School, Masindi Secondary School, Sacred Hearts Secondary School, St James SS, Good Heart SS, Iganga SS, Jinja SSS, Ndejje SSS, Mukono Kings High School, St John’s SS Mukono, Gayaza High, Kasese SS, Kilembe SS and Masaka SSS.

Davis Turinawe, the Development Officer of the Uganda Cricket Association said the tournament is also used to identify talents from upcountry.

“This is another opportunity to see the cream of our future women cricketers in action. We honestly hope they light up the occasion. Our gratitude goes out to UCA for making this possible yet again despite the growing number of participating schools. I would also like to thank SCA together with St. Mary’s Girl’s SS, Madera for hosting us for a second year running, and also to the participating schools that have preferred to turn up for this event over others. Hopefully, at the end of this much anticipated week, cricket will prevail,” Davis Turinawe noted.

“We are delighted to host the Girls Cricket Week 2024 in Soroti. This prestigious event provides an opportunity for the community in Soroti to watch their own in action, promote the popularity of the support among key stakeholders, and also provide an opportunity for the cricket community in Uganda to understand the cricket culture that has enabled many female cricketers to thrive. We look forward to welcoming the teams, their supporters, and the media to Soroti for what promises to be an exciting and memorable event.” Felix Musana – Chairman, Soroti Cricket Academy.

Olila High School will be chasing a fourth title in a row at home, but they face competition from Light SSS, Jinja SS, Masaka SS, and Ndejje SS for the title.

Jinja SS are the record winners of the tournament with eight titles followed by Gayaza High School with four titles.
