KAMPALA - The Minister of State for Privatisation and Investment, Amina Mukalazi, has commended the sustainable local value addition of Uganda’s bamboo plants.
Mukalazi lauded Modern Laminates Limited for setting what she termed a major pace in sustainability, innovation, and regional market expansion, which has driven competitive advantage, thereby adapting to regulatory shifts and responding to evolving demand across packaging, speciality, and hygiene applications.
She made the remarks during factory monitoring visits, where she assessed production, employment, and export potential, as well as the challenges facing manufacturers.
“At MMP Industrial Park in Buikwe, I engaged Dhruv Thummar of Modern Laminates Limited, alongside park directors Akash Dobaria and Jay Patel. I commend their innovation relying on bamboo plants - which are genetically developed here in Uganda- demonstrating the potential for sustainable local value addition,” Minister Mukalazi said, insisting that she was impressed by the innovation that has diversified the product portfolio and commitment to circular economy models in East Africa.
Accompanied by Diana Mutasingwa, the Buikwe District Woman MP and Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Mukalazi was impressed with manufacturers for using locally sourced inputs, which have improved the quality of Ugandan-made products, saying stronger domestic production is critical to creating jobs, expanding exports and reducing reliance on imports.
According to the minister, the investment of $90m is a clear indication that Uganda’s industrialisation agenda is firmly on the right path, driving manufacturing capacity and job creation, with the company specialising in paper and packaging products.
“The company is a major local employer, supporting hundreds of permanent staff plus regional contractors, and achieving import substitution of $100m yearly for paper products across Uganda and coordinates its manufacturing distribution networks across multiple strategic sites in Central and Eastern Uganda,” remarked Mukalazi.
Minister Mutasingwa said the company’s commitment to lifecycle-based sourcing, alongside robust technological adoption, enhances both efficiency and environmental compliance.
