Coffee prices remain subdued in Ibanda district, with traders projecting the trend to continue over the coming weeks.
The Arabica coffee variety ranged from sh15,500 to sh16,000 per kilogramme at most processing plants and buying centres, according to dealers.
However, it cost sh16,800 a kilo at Nyamirima Mutegaya Cooperative Society in Nyamirima, Kagongo Division.
The price ranges compare with sh17,000 at the end of March, but higher than sh15,000 in February.
Relatedly, Robusta coffee variety is trading lower at sh12,000 a kilo in Ibanda town, Nyamirima and Rushango town council in Ibanda North constituency. This indicates a drop from 12,400 last week.
Robusta, however, costs sh11,500 in Igorora town, Ibanda South County. It cost sh12,200 a kilo in mid-April.
Deogratias Tihwayo of Nyakatookye Coffee Cooperative Society attributed the trend to the bearish global market environment.
According to global provider of real-time stock and commodities data, Barchart, coffee prices settled mixed on Tuesday this week, with Arabica rallying sharply to a six-week high as renewed rains in Brazil were delaying the country’s coffee harvest and pushing prices higher.
However, Robusta coffee fell to a one-week low as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz eased supply disruptions, added Barchart.
