Benin has launched a digital platform allowing people of African descent worldwide to apply for recognition as citizens, in a move aimed at reconnecting the country with its diaspora.

The platform, www.myafroorigins.bj, provides an avenue for eligible individuals to apply for Beninese nationality by recognition under laws enacted in 2024 and amended in 2025.

The initiative follows the enactment of Law No. 2024-31 of September 2, 2024, and its subsequent amendment through Law No. 2025-11 of July 1, 2025.

Under the programme, successful applicants will receive a Certificate of Eligibility for Beninese Nationality, issued under the authority of the Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice and Legislation.

The certificate grants holders immediate entry into Benin and the right to reside in the country for three years as they complete the process of acquiring nationality.

The document also features a secure QR code that allows immigration and other travel authorities to verify its authenticity through the official Justice application, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The Government says the digital verification system is intended to facilitate international travel and ease the return of eligible applicants to Benin.

Through its Permanent Mission to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Benin has also contacted foreign affairs ministries and diplomatic missions worldwide to inform them about the initiative and encourage cooperation in facilitating the movement of certificate holders.

The programme is part of Benin’s broader effort to strengthen its historical, cultural and legal ties with people of African descent across the world.
