Business and financial journalists across Africa have until January 31, 2027, to submit entries for the 12th Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards, which offer a top prize of $2,000 (about sh8m).

Sponsored by Continental Reinsurance, the awards recognise journalism that improves public understanding of insurance and reinsurance and their role in economic growth, financial inclusion and sustainable development.

The competition is open to journalists from English, French and Arabic-speaking African countries, with entries required to have been published or broadcast between February 1, 2026, and January 31, 2027.

Lawrence Nazare, the group chief executive officer of Continental Reinsurance, said the awards provide a platform for journalists to bring insurance issues closer to businesses, policymakers and the public.

“The Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards continue to provide an important platform for recognising journalists who bring insurance and reinsurance issues closer to businesses, policymakers and the public,” Nazare said.

He encouraged journalists to submit stories demonstrating the role of insurance in supporting economic growth, managing risk and building resilience.

The 11th edition attracted more than 180 entries, reflecting growing participation in the awards programme.

Journalists are encouraged to submit reports covering emerging industry trends, innovation, regulation, financial inclusion, climate resilience, health insurance and digital transformation.

Six award categories

The awards feature six categories covering different media platforms and languages.

For English-language entries, journalists can compete in broadcast, print, online and social media categories. French-language and Arabic-language journalists can submit entries across broadcast, print, online and social media under their respective combined categories.

An independent panel of judges drawn from the media, business and insurance sectors will evaluate the submissions against established criteria.

The awards also feature the Dr Femi Oyetunji Future Talent Award, which recognises an emerging journalist. The award is selected by the judges and is not open for direct entry.

Cash prizes

The overall winner will receive $2,000 (about sh8m), while category winners will each receive $1,500 (about sh6m).

First runners-up will receive $1,000 (about sh4m), while second runners-up will receive $500 (about sh2m). The Dr Femi Oyetunji Future Talent Award carries a prize of $1,500 (about sh6m).

Winners will also receive trophies and certificates in recognition of their work. Journalists can find the eligibility requirements, submission guidelines and entry details on the official Continental Reinsurance Awards webpage. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2027.
