KAMPALA - The Chairperson of the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) Ruth Namuli observes that the insurance industry stands at a defining moment where purpose, performance and protection must guide its next phase of growth.

According to Namuli, success in today’s insurance industry goes beyond sales as it is defined by trust and empathy as agents walk the journey with clients in society with a shared responsibility for growth.

She was speaking on Wednesday at Hotel Africana in Kampala during the 4th Annual Insurance Agents Convention held under the theme: “Becoming a Champion of Protection: Performance & Purpose in the New Insurance Era.

“At its heart, insurance protects families, businesses and livelihoods from uncertainty. This is not just about statistics or penetration, but about trust. Agents are not just sellers; they are builders of trust and the face of protection,” Namuli noted.|

Jonan Kisakye, the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) chief executive officer, highlighted the sector’s progress, noting the remarkable growth of the convention that now boasts of over 400 delegates compared to just 50 at the inception.

He further acknowledged the role of Absa Bank Uganda in the insurance ecosystem through bancassurance, reaffirming the UIA’s commitment to strengthening collaboration across stakeholders to drive leadership and innovation within the sector.

“I want to assure delegates that the convention will provide meaningful engagement on key areas, including compliance, taxation, and personal development. These are areas of concern, and we are sure that once we address the plight of agents, then we shall witness growth,” Kisakye stated.

Joshua Muyomba, Chairman of the Uganda Insurance Agents Association (UIAA), on the other hand, spoke to the relevance of the convention, noting that it sets a clear tone for the industry’s direction.

He emphasised that collaboration remains central, driving growth, stronger partnerships, and industry influence, all vital initiatives that seek to strengthen institutions and expand global engagement.

“Agents must evolve into structured, fully established agencies with clear vision and long-term impact.”

David Wandera, the managing director of ABSA Bank in his Keynote address focused on how the insurance industry is navigating a defining moment, with growing expectations placed on financial advisors.

“We are living through a defining shift where society expects more from us as financial advisors. I must ask, what does protection really mean? It is in moments when things go wrong that agents must rise as champions.

The Annual Insurance Agents Convention climaxes with the Insurance Agents Awards ceremony, which plays a crucial role in recognising and celebrating the contributions of insurance agents to the industry.
