Have you ever walked into a meeting, wedding or social event feeling well dressed, only to spend the rest of the day wondering whether your makeup looked too heavy or your perfume had already faded?
For many people, looking good is about more than appearance. It shapes confidence, first impressions and the way they carry themselves. Yet beauty experts say many people unknowingly make simple mistakes when choosing skincare products, applying makeup and wearing fragrances, leaving them disappointed despite spending significant amounts of money.

Their advice comes from exhibitors at the Bride & Groom Expo at the UMA Show Grounds in Lugogo, where visitors are picking up practical beauty tips that go far beyond wedding day preparations.
Held under the theme,
Beyond I Do: A Journey of Love, Home and Family, the three-day exhibition is sponsored by Pepsi, Bella Wines and Looks Bespoke, in partnership with Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Oppein Uganda and Roke Telecom.
Match your makeup to the occasion
According to Opra Desire Mugisha, a beauty adviser at Bellazuri, a beauty and skincare store on the Ground Floor of Arena Mall in Kampala, one of the biggest mistakes people make is wearing the same makeup look for every occasion.

A light application of foundation gives you a natural look that’s suitable for work or casual outings. If you are going to a club or an evening event, you can build it up for fuller coverage. Your makeup should always suit the occasion,” she explained.
She said understanding your skin type is just as important as choosing the right shade, which is why the store specialises in cosmetics formulated for African skin. “People with oily skin should apply a primer before foundation because it creates a protective barrier and helps control excess oil. Applying foundation directly to oily skin can make the face appear even shinier,” she said.
Her colleague, Kellen Natukunda, said skincare is often overlooked despite being the foundation of good makeup. “Many people come to us with concerns such as acne or sensitive skin. We first help them understand what their skin needs before recommending products. Even people with allergies should prepare their skin properly instead of applying makeup directly,” she said.
Smell great without spending a fortune
While skincare and makeup shape appearance, fragrance often leaves the lasting impression.
Blessing Tumusime of The Perfumary Bar, a fragrance boutique at The Cube in Kisementi, said many people wrongly believe they need expensive perfumes to smell good.

We decant original perfumes into smaller bottles, allowing people to try different fragrances before investing in a full bottle. It also helps customers discover a signature scent without spending more than a million shillings on one perfume,” she said.
The boutique stocks Arabic, designer, celebrity and niche fragrances, alongside affordable perfume decants. Tumusime added that how perfume is applied is just as important as the fragrance itself.
“If you want your perfume to last longer, apply body oil, petroleum jelly or an oil-based perfume to the areas where you intend to spray. Moisturised skin holds fragrance much longer than dry skin.” She also encouraged people with sensitive skin not to avoid perfumes altogether.

“If someone has allergies, we advise them on the safest areas to apply perfume so it doesn't irritate their skin. There is always a way to enjoy fragrances comfortably.”
The experts agree that confidence should not be measured by the price of beauty products, but by how well they suit an individual’s skin, lifestyle and needs. Rather than chasing expensive brands or following every online trend, they encourage people to invest time in understanding their skin, seeking professional advice and learning how to use beauty products correctly.
