Hundreds of farmers and agricultural sector players turned up for the Harvest Money masterclass at Kasirye Breeders in Nakaziba Village, Mityana District, today (August 22).

Organised by Vision Group through the New Vision Foundation, in partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda, the masterclass is sponsored by Koudijs BV, dfcu Bank and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Joshua Kato, editor of the Harvest Money pullout, urged trainees to participate in the Best Farmer competitions, saying there are many benefits to gain.

“We have hosted the Master Class here at Kasirye Breeders because he is a Best Farmer winner. You can be the next Kasirye,” he said.

John Eremu, the manager of New Vision Foundation, thanked participants for attending the training and supporting the Vision Group, and promised that the company has a lot to share, aiming to transform the farming sector.

Dr William Kabanda, a trainer from URUS, urged farmers to improve their dairy breeds as part of efforts to achieve Uganda’s target of producing 20 billion litres of milk by 2040.

“With limited land, we have to keep improved dairy breeds, but we must also ensure proper feeding and feed management. Choose a breed according to what you want to produce from your milk,” Dr Kabanda said.

Dr Kabanda also advised farmers to embrace technology in dairy farming, particularly by using pregnancy testing kits to confirm pregnancy in cows as early as 28 days after conception.

Dr Moses Kasaawe of Ceva France took trainees through animal health and disease management. He has urged farmers to pay close attention to water sources, housing, biosecurity and nutrition to keep their animals healthy and productive.

During the poultry training, Dr. Geoffrey Mukama from Koudijs BV urged farmers to love what they venture into if they are to make profits from farming.

Mukama advised farmers not to feed broilers under heat stress, warning that doing so can cause blood vessel rupture and sudden deaths, especially among overweight birds.
