Bujagali was draped in a mixture of emotions as tears flowed freely among mourners, while sweet memories of the late Quad Bikes CEO Rob Davies were exchanged.

Friends and business associates recounted tales of their cherished moments with a man whose infectious joviality had become synonymous with the joyous spirit of tourism in Bujagali, Busoga.

Last weekend, the jolly guides who often take adventure-savvy tourists tubing, bird watching, or immersing in the rich Busoga culture were greeted by sombre moods, grappling with the void left by their partner.

Nga kitalo” (how sad a loss) instead of Kodeyo (How are you?) became the salutation of village mates and strangers.

Davies departed this world on January 19, 2024, at Case Clinic in Kampala city, succumbing to a relentless wave of health challenges that had besieged him since December 24, 2023.

Slow response to ailment

Marjory, his grieving widow, shared the heartbreaking journey with those gathered at his Bujagali home during the vigil.

"He initially complained of stomach irritation and fever, showing a reluctance to seek medical attention. Only when I insisted on a health checkup and blood samples were taken did we discover a viral infection. He regained his strength with medication and resumed his business activities, albeit at a slower pace," she recounted.

"Unfortunately, the ailment resurfaced, prompting him to seek medical attention at Nile Hospital in Jinja".

A towering legacy

Although he is gone, Rob’s with his enduring passion for tourism has left an indelible mark on the industry. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who shared in the joy of exploration under his guidance. It was audible that mourners bid farewell and took note of his love for laughter, making merry and the unwavering spirit that defined him.

During the funeral service, tourism ministry secretary Doreen Katusiime shared the collective aspiration to ensure that Rob's legacy continues to thrive even in his absence.

"The upcoming Explore Busoga would undoubtedly have had a distinctive touch with Rob involved in the arrangements, leveraging his global network of peers and innovative ideas. Though he is no longer with us, we are committed to preserving and nurturing his business for the long term," Katusiime said, adding: "Bungee jumping and Quad bikes, among other thrilling attractions, will remain integral components of the region's offerings, captivating crowds and imprinting lasting memories".

In appreciating his commitment the ministry conveyed their dedication to honouring his contributions to the industry, by ensuring that his influence endures in the continued allure of tourism not only in Busoga but in Destination Uganda.

Sudhir Katwi, Rob’s close friend, shared heartfelt memories of their daily interactions, where not a day went by without exchanging greetings or engaging in discussions about business at Nile Bangee, his recent acquisition. Their conversations extended beyond commerce, encompassing social issues and global events.

"The world has grown smaller with social media, and Rob played a pivotal role in making Uganda a hotspot for Quad biking, offering a unique experience to tourists seeking a respite from the glittering lights and urban lifestyles of the UK, USA, Asia, and the EU. Through his ventures, he employed 50 youths, transforming hobbies into income-generating activities," tearfully recalled Sudhir. "Beyond Quad bikes, Bujagali became adorned with stalls brewing coffee, baking Rolex, and Pubs stocked with Uganda Waragi and locally brewed lagers."

Stephen Oxby echoing a similar sentiment, fondly reminisced about the cherished moments spent with Rob’s dream of making Busoga the Mecca of tourism in Africa.

"Davies was full of life and a true go-getter," lamented Oxby. “The void left by his passing is felt not only in the business realm but in the hearts of all who were touched by his vibrant spirit. May his indomitable legacy endure, and may he rest in eternal peace.”

In a touching tribute, 50 employees from Robs' Quad Bike and Nile Bangee jumping business fought back tears as they eulogized their leader, remembering how he affectionately referred to each of them as "Mate" and "Darling."

His parents and two of his children back home in the UK attended the eulogy and burial virtually. The road from Bujagali to Kafuka village in Njeru where he was buried on January 21, 2024, was graced with surprised onlookers seeing a convoy of more than 200 cars and bikes.
