2026 FIFA World Cup: Cranes set to kickstart qualification journey

This Sunday, a group of home-based Uganda Cranes players and officials will depart for Morocco to settle in for their upcoming two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Guinea and Somalia.

The foreign-based players will link up with their teammates in the Moroccan city of Berkane from their respective clubs.

Uganda Cranes head coach Put Paul Joseph has confirmed a final squad of 27 players for the November 17 and November 21 qualification group matches, according to a statement released Friday by Ugandan football governing body FUFA.

Eleven of these are home-based players: five from Vipers, three from SC Villa and one each from URA, Maroons and Kitara.

They will fly out of the country together with 15 officials on a 10pm Uganda Airlines flight to Dubai on Sunday. From there, the team will connect to the Moroccan port city of Casablanca using Emirates.

FUFA executive committee member Rasoul Ariga is the leader of delegation.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in the US, Canada and Mexico.

A total of nine slots in the final tournament and one inter-confederation play-off slot are reserved for African teams.

The winner of each of the nine groups of six teams will qualify for the tournament.

In Group G, Uganda will face Guinea on November 17, before playing Somalia four days later. The other group teams are Algeria, Mozambique and Botswana.
