Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has this Tuesday moved a motion to pay tribute to the late Florence Alice Lubega.

Lubega, who has been given an official burial by the government, died on October 28 at the age of 103.

“Lubega immeasurably participated in shaping the destiny of Uganda and served Uganda with dedication and patriotism and was instrumental in highlighting and addressing gender inequality existing in Ugandan societies,” Nabbanja said during plenary session.

Mathias Mpuuga, the leader of opposition MPs, said Lubega lost all her property when she went into exile.

“The existing government should try and restore what was lost unfairly. The government owes a duty to the family,” he said.

Lubega joined Parliament in 1962 and served in the Legislative Council between 1958 and 1961.

In 1962, she returned as Ssingo North West MP, now present-day Mityana and Mubende districts, becoming the first female Ugandan MP.
