📷 Museveni hails Nyerere as Africa’s unifier at Namugongo prayers

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on Sunday, June 1, 2025, represented President Yoweri Museveni at the annual Namugongo pilgrimage held in remembrance of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, former President of Tanzania.


 



The prayers, which take place every June 1 at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, are held to pray for the canonisation of Nyerere, who is remembered for his contribution to Africa’s liberation and unity.

President Museveni’s message was delivered by Nabbanja during a mass led by Fr Anthony Mario from Tanzania.

 

 

In his message, Museveni commended Nyerere for his good deeds not only to Tanzania but to the whole of Africa.

He urged pilgrims to pray for Nyerere’s canonisation and the fulfilment of his dream of a united Africa.



Also in attendance was a Tanzanian delegation led by Sr Eldina Ntandu, the head of Tanzanian pilgrims from Hunduma.

Maria Gabriel Magige Waninga, popularly known as Maama Nyerere, was represented by her grandson, Hellen Nyerere and Godfrey Mgasa.



Nabbanja was accompanied by ethics and integrity state minister Lily Akello and primary education state minister Joyce Moriku Kaducu.
