COVID-19 | DEATH | DR. MPEKA                     

Dr. Betty Mpeka, a Ugandan medic who has been at the forefront of fighting malaria under the Malaria Consortium, has succumbed to COVID-19.

Mpeka, who was the deputy chief of party for the Uganda Indoor Residual Spraying project, lost the battle for her life on Sunday (June 6, 2021) morning.

Mpeka also worked as a communicable diseases specialist for the Uganda Programme for Human and Holistic Development (UPHOLD). 

She was a member of the American Public Health Association, which roots for science, action and health.

As of Saturday (June 5), results of COVID-19 tests done on June 3, 2021 confirmed 670 new cases out of 4,643 samples tested, according to the ministry of health. “The cumulative confirmed cases are 51,676,” the ministry noted.

The health ministry said the total COVID-19 deaths now stand at 374, while active cases on admission stood at 634. The total number of persons vaccinated is at 748,676.

President Yoweri Museveni said government targets to vaccinate 4.8 million Ugandans before relaxing the COVID-19 measures. 

The President is today evening expected to talk to the country about the new COVID-19 measures agreed upon by the joint task force.
