Rukare re-appointed CANA vice president

The FINA elective congress will take place June in Doha

National Council of Sports (NCS) chairman and former Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) president Donald Rukare has been re-appointed to the CANA bureau as vice-president of the CANA Zone 3 for the next 4-year cycle.

Delegates from over 40 countries gathered recently for the virtual General Congress of the African Swimming Confederation (CANA). The Congress originally scheduled for April 2020 in Durban, South Africa had to be postponed due to the global COVID pandemic.

Rukare who is also a member of the FINA Bureau was re-appointed alongside president Sam Ramsamy (South Africa), Secretary-General, Mohamed Diop (Senegal), and Treasurer-General Mr Jace Naidoo (South Africa).

Other zonal presidents that were appointed included vice president Zone 1; Zouheir El Moufti (Morocco), Vice-President Zone 2 Babatunde Fatayi-Williams (Nigeria), and Vice-President Zone 4  Mario Fernandes (Angola).

Members of the bureau include Yasser Idriss (Egypt), Youssoufou Ahmadou Tidjani (Niger), Thauriya Diria (Tanzania), Doreen Tiborcz (Mauritius), and Ayishatu Farida Iddriss (Ghana).

The Congress unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the candidature of Husain Al Musallam (Kuwait) for president of FINA.

The FINA elective congress will take place in Doha, Qatar on June 5, 2021.

The Congress was held on the 50th anniversary of CANA, which was formed in Cairo, Egypt in November 1970. The Congress reviewed its activities over the last four years and acknowledged the rapid growth on the African continent at both the Continental and Regional Championships of CANA.

These competitions now attract all 53-member countries from across the continent. This was largely due to the changes in the policy of the International Aquatic Federation (FINA) has increased its support for the National Federations development programs in each country.
