Dozens of gorilla babies have been born since the Corona-19 pandemic Lockdown was imposed in March.

As that was not enough, more is expected before the end of 2020. This was revealed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) executive director Sam Mandha.

"The good news is that 12 baby gorillas have been produced this year," said Mwandha. "Better still the survivors of the Silverback Rafiki which was killed during the Lockdown have split but they are all doing well."

He said six of them remained with his son but the other six joined two other habituated groups.

"We monitor their well fare to the dot," said Mwandha on a happy note.

"Better still, most mammal, reptile and primate populations are on a steady increase. This follows our beefing up security to contain the poaching activities that escalated during the Lockdown."

People save for decades to have an opportunity to spend an hour with gorillas.

The arrest, trial and sentencing of the culprits drove the message home that the rangers are watching.

Mwandha is urging Ugandans to develop a culture of visiting: National Parks, climb mountains, go for nature walks, track gorillas, or birding.

"People save for decades to have an opportunity to spend an hour with gorillas that are within your backyard," lamented Mwandha. "And yet citizens take these treasures for granted. There is a lot to interest you in the parks."

He mentioned a: game drive, boat ride, nature walks in the forests and visiting some historical sites.

"All you have to do at this time is to adhere to the Structural Operation Procedures of keeping distance, washing hands and wearing a mask," stressed Mwandha. "We want to have fun while controlling the spread of Covid-19."
