Police raids home of Anite-backed candidate in Koboko

A crowd outside Koboko Central Police Station booed the minister as she was hurriedly taken back to her car.

State minister for investment Evelyn Anite on Tuesday morning confronted Police officers at Koboko Central Police Station after they raided the home of independent candidate Charles Yakani and impounded National Resistance Movement (NRM) campaign materials.

It remains unclear how the materials meant for the official candidate Dr Charles Ayume who defeated Anite found their way to Yakani's home. It also remains unclear why Anite who lost to Ayume in the primaries chose to confront the Police led Koboko Divisional Police Commander Steven Abwanga.

In the confrontation, Anite accused the Police of masterminding her loss to Ayume in the August primaries and also claimed they had impounded the materials to cause President Yoweri Museveni's loss in the general elections slated for early next year.

However in an interview Abwanga noted that they raided Yukani's home after they were tipped that campaign materials meant for the President had been diverted.

"We only acted on a tip off and it was rather unfortunate that the minister who admitted knowledge of material meant for Dr Ayume being in possession of Yakani, chose to attack us,"Abwanga said.

Efforts to get a comment from Anite proved futile while Ayume's phone was also unavailable.

A crowd outside the station booed Anite as she was hurriedly taken back to her car.

Sources in Koboko noted that Anite who had accepted her loss during the NRM primaries was secretly bankrolling Yukani against Ayume.

However in a tweet on Monday Ayume noted that, "comrades and friends, following yesterday news from Koboko, I wish to urge all especially NRM supporters to ignore any underhand sinister plans to frustrate our Member of Parliament candidature. Let us stick to the party flag bearers at all levels from LC to the Presidency. Let us focus on Koboko development," Ayume noted.

Ironically, Anite had in August this year rallied all NRM candidates who had lost in the party primaries to support the official party candidates.
