COVID-19: Public urged to be responsible for their health

As the country is still grappling with COVID-19, experts have urged the public to be responsible for their health.

The senior Health Educator at Wakiso district Bonny Natukunda said, as they continue to educate Ugandans on the deadly pandemic, it was also necessary for people to adhere to the Standard Operation Procedure (SOPs) that were set by the ministry of health.

Natukunda who was one of the trainers during the two days training on COVID-19 for health workers at Pauline hotel in Lira city stressed the need for integrated disease surveillance. 

She called on everyone to be on the lookout as the community transmissions are at their highest.

The Principal Communication officer at the ministry of health Dr. Ocaatre Ronald said that Uganda had been ranked as a country with the best risk communication strategy.

He stressed the need for more community awareness since COVID-19 was at its highest yet communities seem unbothered.

Natukunda appreciated BRAC Uganda for the support they have extended to the government that has helped to train health educators in different districts across the country.

She said the training will impact the communities positively. And also commended the ministry of health for the effort they have set in place to sensitise communities.

The objective of the training was to orient the participants on integrated disease surveillance and response and psychosocial support for COVID-19 and risk communication that are very key in the fight for COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Inshallah Franco, the program manager at BRAC Uganda cautioned health educators to be more careful as they fight COVID-19 as some of the frontline health workers had already succumbed to the deadly COVID-19.

He called upon the participants to sensitise communities than ever before and continue to observe the SOPs themselves.

The training attracted district health teams from 26 districts in West Nile, Acholi, Lango sub-region, and some Eastern districts.
