Dr Kigonya given heroic send-off

Dr Edward Kigonya, the internationally revered nephrologist and founding proprietor of Nile Clinic who succumbed to pneumonia on November 11, aged 79, was today (Saturday, November 14) laid to rest at his country home at Lumuli, Kitende, in Wakiso district.

The function started with an early morning funeral mass at St Edward Lumuli Catholic sub-parish church, which is being built on the land that Kigonya donated.

The mass was celebrated by the parish-priest of Mpala, Fr. Joseph Kirumira.

The final funeral mass was subsequently held at the deceased's home, which is located a short distance from the sub-parish church. The mass was celebrated by the parish-priest of Kabulamuliro, Fr Francis Seguya, Seguya. 



Various speakers who delivered Dr Kigonya's eulogise during the function spoke highly of his love and commitment to the medical profession, his devotion to the Catholic Church, his love and commitment to his family and his infectious social demeanor.

Among those who eulogized Dr Kigonya was the Deputy Katikkiro and finance minister of Buganda, the Rt. Hon Robert Wagwa Nsibirwa and the former finance minister of Uganda, Dr Maria Nsibirwa Kiwanuka. Other speakers included Dr Emmanuel Sekasanvu, Dr Moses Kamya (from Makerere University Medical School), Engineer Rotarian Mathias Kaanda Kizza (Chairman of KAANA Najjanankumbi Social Club), Paul Magimbi (the LC1 Chairman of Prison Village, Mbuya) and Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa.The Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko (parliament), the Rt Hon Partick Luwaga Mugumbule also graced the function and delivered a special message from the Katikkiro of Buganda, the Rt Hon Charles Peter Mayiga.

Dr Kigonya's children, through their sibling Simon Kigonya, pledged to carry on the wonderful social and charitable legacy of their dad.
