Mugisha Muntu camps in home district

Maj.Gen.Mugisha Muntu is campaigning in Ntungamo district to hunt votes for the top position in the country, on Wednesday.

Muntu, who is one of the 11 candidates vying for the country's top position, is expected to campaign in different places in the district, rally for support from his home residents. 

Muntu was born in October 1958 at Kitunga village in the present-day Ntungamo district to Enock Ruzima Muntuyera and Aida Matama Muntuyera.

It is said that his father Muntuyera was a strong government functionary and close friend to Ugandan leader Milton Obote.

Muntu attended school at Mbarara Junior School, Kitunga Primary School and Kitunga High School which was later renamed Muntuyera High School in honour of his father.

He is the current President of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), the party he founded in 2019 after falling out with Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a party he previously served as its president.

In his statements, Muntu said he parted ways with FDC citing ideological differences with the party leadership at the time.

He served as the army commander of the UPDF, the highest position in the Uganda military from 1989-1998, and was a member of the constituent assembly from 1994-1995 and parliamentarian.

Muntu was kicked out from the army command and appointed a minister, a position he turned down. 

In 2001, Muntu was selected by the members of the Uganda Parliament to serve as one of the nine Ugandan representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly. He is married to Lulia Kakonge Muntu.
