The Uganda Police Force has installed a number of cameras along the great northern corridor to monitor cargo truck movements and ensure the security of other motorists.

The cameras have also been installed in hotspot areas in Malaba, Tororo, and Busia towns to curb the rampant waylaying of travellers.

The Bukedi regional Police commander Julius Ceaser Tusingwire cautioned motorists to desist from reckless driving and be mindful more especially on highways so as not to ram into the installations.

He also cautioned truck drivers from overloading beyond the height of the cameras saying they will pay dearly for their actions in case they damage the cameras.

Tusingwire thanked the government and the Police for beefing up efforts to detect potential criminals and follow up on crimes that have already been committed.

"The era of waylaying people, siphoning fuel from trucks on the highway, stealing vehicles from people's homes and breaking into shops in town is going to end because in this digitalised era we shall be able to detect and follow up such criminals," Tusingwire said.

He said they have focused on sensitising the public to appreciate the use of the cameras for their own good adding that those located within the installations must safeguard them against vandalism.
