The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has summoned the minister of internal affairs Gen. Jeje Odongo to explain to the House, why promotions in the Uganda Police Force are rare.

Kadaga's summoning of Odongo, followed a matter of national importance raised by Gulu Municipality MP Lyandro Komaketch, who expressed concern over Police taking ages to promote senior officials in the Police force.

"We don't have any promotion strategy by the police, we know it should be based on merit, performance, but there are no promotions among police officers like we see in the army," Komaketch said.

The MPs demanded that the government explains the remuneration formula for police officers saying some officers earn way too low compared to others.

Morris Kibalya (Kigulu South) said that; "We want to know the formula they use for salary structure, it is not clear. You find an OC earning more money than the DPC".

Ruling on the matter Kadaga, who was chairing the House, resolved that Odongo appears before the House to explain why there are no regular promotions in the force, like it is in the army.

Kadaga told Parliament that a number of Police constables had petitioned her office complaining about the lack of promotion in the force.

"I have received letters who have been serving as police constables for the last 20 years, but they are not being promoted, the minister needs to come here and update this House," Kadaga said.
