INDEPENDENCE HISTORY

On October 7, the Duke and Duchess of Kent arrived at Entebbe Airport for the official start of Uganda's independence celebrations.

A cannon gun was fired from the end of the runway as the Duke stepped out from his aircraft. They were welcomed by the governor, Sir Walter Coutts and his wife.

The Duke represented the Queen and formally handed over instruments of independence to the prime minister, Milton Obote.

The same afternoon at Lake Victoria in Entebbe, the Kabaka's government organised a royal canoe regatta, a celebration which dates back 200 years. Five Buganda counties competed for the coveted silver shield, which was presented for the first time to the winners.

By the lakeside, a jubilant crowd of over 20,000 people cheered their teams as they watched the race.
