Rugby Union suspends Uganda Cup due to COVID-19

The Betway Kobs will not be able to defend their Uganda Cup title next season.
This after the national Rugby governing body, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) decided to suspend the Uganda Cup for next season citing a lack of time to organise it.
Ramsey Olinga, the URU Chief Executive Officer disclosed this to New Vision online saying it will resume in the 2021/2022 season.
"We shall not have it this year because there is no time to organise it. We intend to start with the league in November once the government lifts the ban on the sporting activities," Olinga said.
The Uganda Cup opens the new rugby season every November and it is the only tournament that championship clubs get the opportunity to gauge their strength against the premier sides.
When contacted, Pirates secretary Herbert Wafula said despite not being consulted, the decision is for the good of the sport.
"We have not yet received official communication from URU, but whatever decision they took, it is good for the sport because the prevailing situation has made the operation of clubs and union very difficult," Wafula said.
Kobs' coach Davis Kiwalabye also supported the idea saying that it is a good move because the international calendar is more important.
