KAMPALA - The Federation of Hawkers and Vendors Association (FHVA) has embarked on sensitizing its members about COVID-19 guidelines set by the Ministry of Health.

The call, aimed at stopping the increased cases of COVID-19 in Kampala, comes after the country registered more new COVID cases and two deaths in Kampala on Monday.

The two deaths in Kampala were a 35 year old businesswoman in Kikuko and a 36 year old man in Kisenyi. The vendors and hawkers constitute a big number of people in the city centre.

The association's chairman, Richard Lubega said they have invested much in sensitizing their members to abide by the health measures to prevent the spreading of the virus and warned those who defy the guidelines not to operate.

Congestion along Ben Kiwanuka Street, experts say vendors have failed to observe the standard operation procedures in the effort to curb COVID-19.

"Let's all wash hands frequently with soap and water,  use an alcohol based hand rub, wear face masks and maintain social distance among others. This is when we shall overcome the pandemic," Lubega said.

The General Secretary of the association, Ahmed Kasozi said the number of vendors is increasing day by day because the majority of shop attendants are leaving Arcades to sell their products on the streets.

He said they have since warned them to vacate the streets and return to their shops.

"We have warned the shop attendants to return to their shops. They must go back to where they belong," Kasozi said.

Shop attendants are facing the challenge of paying rent and most of them have failed to agree with their landlords over rent.
