Tomatoes are some of the vegetables that almost every family, institution or home cannot do without. They are daily spices in our foods and very few people can savor a meal without them.

That is why when they are out of season, tomatoes are very expensive. You can, however, cut on that cost especially during this lock down by growing them at home.

For home grown tomatoes or offices, Yusuf Wabwire a gardener in Jinja advises you to first prepare a nursery bed where seeds can grow into tiny seedlings.

If that is too much for you, Wabwire advises that you to purchase from farmers who already have them in their nursery beds.

"Then get a pot or a tin or a bucket or any place you wish to grow your tomatoes add in manure to the soil to make sure that it is fertile," Wabwire said.

She advised that this manure could be chicken, cow or pig droppings.

Wabwire explained that if it is not a rainy season, one should ensure to irrigate the crops twice or thrice a week.

In addition, Wabwire said you can mulch the pots using grass or leaves so that the moisture does not leave the soil for better development of crops.

"However, one should not pour too much water as this might erode the nutrients and the crops wilt," she said.

In order for the tomatoes to grow well and not attacked by pests, Wabwire said you should spray them.

"Spraying kills the germs and helps in proper growth of the vegetables and it should be on the leaves to enable the fruit grow without pests," he said.

Growing tomatoes is not only limited to homes, but also offices can take up this exciting venture for beatification of the place, eating healthily and avoiding the costs.
