ELECTION WATCH

KAMPALA - Aspirants who are interested in running in the 2021 parliamentary elections on the NRM ticket made their way to the ruling party's head offices in Kyadondo to pick nomination forms on Thursday.

They included Vice-President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, who is the incumbent Bukoto County MP.

Another was URA senior commissioner Dickson Kateshumbwa, who is interested in the Sheema Municipality parliamentary seat.

He said he wants to quench the area people's thirst of "good leadership".

"Why I am standing is that the people of Sheema Municipality have had a long struggle for good leadership. They are thirsty for good leadership. I found it necessary to go in and relieve them of that."

'Come to politics when you are ready'

NRM electoral commission chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi addressing reporters

Meanwhile, the NRM electoral commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi, told reporters that the party has one presidential flagbearer - President Yoweri Museveni.

This, he said, was after former Makindye East MP John Ssimbwa, who had expressed interest in challenging Museveni for the national chairperson position, "did not commit himself, even by paying the expression of interest fee".

"We don't deal with political reality as fiction. You come to politics when you are ready.

"So I can declare to you and to Uganda that NRM has one presidential flagbearer - that is His Excellency YK [Yoweri Kaguta] Museveni," said Odoi.

On Monday, Museveni, through his personal lawyers, picked his expression of interest and nomination forms for the positions of national NRM chairperson and party presidential flagbearer for the 2021 elections.

He paid sh10m required for nomination as presidential flagbearer and another sh10m for national NRM chairperson.
