Father's Day: What hobbies do you share with your father?

Jun 19, 2020

If you, like me, thought that your hobbies were entirely of your own making and will; well, guess again. You do not like a particular sport or play an instrument because you just happen to like it.

Scientists, through research, found that our hobbies also have a genetic attachment, which makes us like the same stuff our parents or even grandparents like.

An article in The Daily Telegraph, ‘Hobbies and careers are ‘inherited', which reported findings of a study, said that one in four people will share interests their kin had.

"The study of 2,234 British adults suggests we inherit our love for certain jobs and hobbies in much the same way we inherit our surnames and eye-colour. Researchers have suggested people have a "hobby gene" which means they pick up their parents' hobbies such as Morris dancing, fishing or sailing, and professions such as acting," read the article in part.

Now you know your uniqueness is not really unique because it may be a trait from one of the people in your bloodline. Scientists call it the ‘hobby gene'. Take, for example, David Obua, the left-wing footballer, followed in his father's footsteps, Denis Obua, who was a football too.
