KAMPALA - No candidate in the 2021 general elections will be allowed to hold campaign rallies, the Electoral Commission has announced.

According to the revised roadmap for the next general elections issued by the electoral body on Tuesday, all candidates will be expected to campaign through various forms of media.

The electoral organization had earlier issued the roadmap and undertaken a number of activities. But the implementation of the roadmap was suspended in March to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.

The revised roadmap shows that general elections will take place between January 10 and February 8 next year.

The precise dates for elections of various categories of candidates in the general elections, according to the electoral body chairman, Simon Byabakama, will be determined after nominations.

The presidential candidates will be nominated between November 2 and 3. The nominations for parliamentary candidates will take place from October 12 and 23.

The candidates in the local government elections, including special interest groups, will be carried out between September 7 and 17.

"Only three people will be expected at the nomination venue; the candidate, nominator and seconder," Byakabama told journalists at the organization's headquarters.

He explained that the ban on public rallies is informed by the current measures against gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. "It is not within my powers to postpone the election. That is supposed to be done by Parliament," he added.
