Coronavirus: Gov't starts relief food distribution

The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, today (Saturday) flagged off two trucks fully loaded with posho and beans.

KAMPALA  - Government has launched the first phase of food distribution to the vulnerable people affected by the lockdown due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, today (Saturday) flagged off two trucks fully loaded with posho and beans. The food will be distributed in Bwaise, a Kampala city suburb in Kawempe Division.

 

 
He was flanked by his deputy Moses Ali, ministers, other government officials and security personnel. 

He revealed that the government will also distribute food to all hospitals, barracks and other places through its special management fund.

 

 
Rugunda said that food will strictly be given to people who are at their respective homes in order to observe the social distancing. 

He also commended Kampala businessman Hamis Kiggundu, who contributed sh100m in cash to fight the global pandemic COVID-19.

"We call upon other people who can afford to come up and support the Presidential initiative," he said.

 

 
In his own words, Kiggundu, said, "Uganda is our country, therefore, we should come up and extend a helping hand to our fellow countrymen who are in need with the little we have," he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru, said the food distribution will be strictly spearheaded by the joint security force with the help of the local council authorities.
