A statement from the health ministry in Kigali said an Indian citizen who arrived from Mumbai on March 8, has tested positive to the virus.

"The patient had no symptoms upon arrival in Rwanda and reported himself to a health facility on March 13, where he was immediately tested," a statement posted on Twitter on Saturday said.

The ministry added: "He is currently under treatment in stable condition, isolated from other patients. The tracing of all contacts has been conducted for further management."

In the region, Kenya was the first to record a positive case of COVID-19 on Friday.
