MAKERERE    STRIKE

KAMPALA - For the past three days, Makerere University has been rocked with teargas. Rubber bullets in the sky and several students arrested.

The mayhem that has engulfed the University arouse due to the 15% tuition increment. To show dissatisfaction, Makerere students resorted to demonstrating.

In the aftermath of yesterday's strike, 12 students were arrested adding to the 33 that had been arrested on Wednesday. This was revealed by the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango during a press conference.

According to Onyango most of the detained students refused to record statements insisting that they wanted to only talk to their relatives and their lawyers.

"We are only waiting for a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to decide the fate of the students," he said

According to the University's manager of communications and International relations Dr. Muhammad Kiggundu, the 15% tuition increment is only paid by first-year students.

He said that the increment was effected in the academic year 2018/19 and will last for five years. He emphasised that the 15% increment was not added to continuing students' tuition.

Kiggundu said the University administration is willing to meet the University guild leadership to address students' grievances at hand.
