Evelyn Namatovu to represent Uganda at Miss International

Sep 19, 2019

Uganda made its debut in Miss International in 2009.

The 23- year-old student former Miss Uganda contestant Evelyn Namatovu will be only the second Ugandan to represent Uganda in Miss International this year after almost a 10-year absence.

Uganda made its debut in Miss International in 2009. It was the five-foot-nine and a half Pierra Akwero, 22, at the time flying the national flag at the 49th Miss International pageant, held in Chengdu Sichuan China.

Now after almost a decade of absence, the honour to represent Uganda has been bestowed on the five-foot-eleven Namatovu.

Born to Samuel Kironde and Margaret Namusoke from Mityana, Namtovu, a student at Makerere University Business School is awaiting graduation next year having studied a Bachelors of Entrepreneurship and Business Management.

But before that big feat, Namatovu has the grand opportunity to represent Uganda at Miss International.

Namatovu was lucky to be selected through online casting and interview, given the limited time the Miss International Uganda Franchise had to choose a contestant for the global event.

Monica Akech, the National Director of Miss International Uganda franchise says they were on the lookout for a girl who had participated in a beauty pageant before and with modeling experience. Namatovu came top.

On Wednesday in Kampala, Namatovu was unveiled to the media.

She leaves for Japan next month for pre-pageant activities and on November 12, this year Uganda will make its return at the 59th edition of the Miss International.

Namatovu will be aiming at making history at the pageant by clinching the crown on Uganda's second appearance.

Miss International is a Japan-based international beauty pageant that is organized by the International Culture Association in Tokyo, Japan annually.

From November Miss International Uganda Franchise will open casting calls for the entire country to crown the Miss International Uganda 2020 ahead of Miss International global pageant.

First held in 1960, Miss International is one of the oldest beauty pageants in the world alongside Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Earth.

Its primary focus is on establishing international relations and cultural exchanges among nations which Uganda's representatives to the pageant aim to utilize to promote Uganda's arts and tourism industry.
