Pece War Memorial Stadium and FUFA Technical Centre Njeru have been selected to host the CECAFA U-20 Challenge Cup Championship games that get underway on Saturday in Gulu.

Pece will host the opening game between South Sudan and Djibouti, Group A games and the finals on October 5.

According to the chairman of the tournament Local Organizing Committee Darius Mugoye, Gulu was selected ahead of other venues because of the passion and excitement Gulu people expressed in FUFA Drum games by turning up in big crowds.

"Gulu people are very enthusiastic to host this competition," Mugoye stated.

Mugoye further stressed that Uganda is determined to win this year's edition just like they have done with the recent CECAFA U-15 and U-17 championships.

"Having been the champions of the CECAFA U15 and U17, we look forward to winning this tournament as we build a strong national team since our dream is to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022," added Mugoye.

CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye noted that eleven countries including hosts Uganda, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia, and Djibouti have confirmed their participation with the exception of Rwanda.

"Rwanda will miss this tournament due to several engagements. The budget too can't enable them to participate in the tournament" Musonye stated.

FUFA Technical Centre Njeru will host Group B and C games respectively.

Uganda was mandated by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) to host the championships.

The 'Hippos' (Uganda) have been drawn in Group A with Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti and will open their account against Eritrea in the second game of matchday one.

Group B  is made up of Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Zanzibar and Group C  hosting Burundi, South Sudan and Somalia respectively.
