A Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) soldier who shot a People Power mobiliser in Amolatar, Moses Okot p'Bitek Jr, and seriously injured him, has been further remanded.

Pte Moses Tumukunde a resident of Amolatar town council and the bodyguard of Amolatar resident district commissioner Lillian Eyal on May 22, 2019, shot and seriously injured Okot,  a Gulu based lawyer and People Power mobiliser for Amolatar district.

Tumukunde was charged with attempted murder and briefly remanded at Amolatar Government Prison before he was transferred to Lira Main Prison.

While appearing in court on Friday before Grade One Magistrate Igga Adiru who stood in for the Chief Magistrate Janeva Natukunda, the matter was adjourned to August 16 for hearing.

Okot said he nearly paid with his life when he was shot by Tumukunde on the orders of Eyal. The case was registered under file vide Amolatar CRB243/2019.

Okot claimed that he was placed under house arrest for opposing the harassment of fishermen on Lake Kioga by the army.

Police recovered an SMG rifle with four full magazines and another with 28 rounds of ammunition when Tumukunde was arrested.

Okot who was in court with his parents said he will he's exploring a civil suit against Eyal and the Attorney General.
