While most of the Uganda People's Defence Force big wigs assembled in Kasanje in Wakiso, Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho (Salim Saleh) stayed away, hosting yet another commemorative event.

Saleh, the Senior Presidential advisor on Defence and security, remained at his Kapeeka base in Nakaseke with a group of people (Veteran Elders) he says played a big role in the National Resistance Army armed struggle.

The National Resistance Army fought the government of Milton Obote between 1980 and 1986. The war was mainly fought in the central Uganda parts of Luwero.

It is not surprising that Gen. Saleh on Sunday stayed away from Kasanje and instead interacted with 28 of them. They included 13 women, six of them widows.

"I spent the Heroes Day with the founders of Kabalega Unit. Maj. Gen Sam Wasswa (RO 0074), one of the first NRA recruits, attended our get-together with his mother," Saleh said this morning.

Saleh, who is the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, says he will soon embark on a fundraising drive to support individual projects of his guests.

  Flashback:

In 1981, Kabalega, operating in Kapeeka was one of the first units set up by the NRA.

In his book titled "Sowing the Mustard Seed," Museveni writes" …By this time the recruits were swelling. I think we had hit the figure of 200 recruits. I, therefore, decided to form extra sections."

Other established zonal units at the time were: Mondlane in Makulubita, Nkurumah in Singo and Abdul Nasser in Matugga.

Months later, Museveni the Commander in Chief of NRA established Luttamaguzi unit in Kikandwa plus Ngoma and Mwanga in Kiwanguzi area
