Second Deputy Prime Minister Kirunda Kivenjinja has urged the people of Busoga to adopt an attitude to work instead of always expecting freebies from the government.

Kivenjinja made the remarks on Thursday at the burial of Peter Bogere who served in the office of the Iganga resident district commissioner, at Isikiro village, Buwaya sub-county, in Mayuge district.

Kivejinja said the majority of Basoga have refused to work and instead resorted to idling in busy trading centres or drinking alcohol with the hope that government will provide them with money or provide free education to their children.

"Let us avoid this habit because it is painting a bad picture for the young generation who might think that life is all that simple," he said.

Kivenjinja said much as the government was committed to improving the welfare of its people through the provision of free medical services and education, there is a need for locals to work hard so that they provide for necessities or emergencies that may occur.

He described Bogere as a hardworking, dedicated and trustworthy person who served in the office of the resident district commissioner as a cadre voluntarily for a long time.

Kivenjinja said the government will take care of the deceased's four children and widow by providing necessities like school fees and other needs to ensure they continue pursuing their education till university level.

The Iganga NRM chairman, Hajji Abubaker Walubi, urged government reward people who would have served the country while they are still alive instead of waiting at funerals in order to heap praises.

Walubi urged Basoga to embrace government programs like Operation Wealth Creation to ensure they uplift their household incomes instead of wasting their valuable time discussing politics.

The Bukedea resident district commissioner, Ramathan Walugembe who worked with the deceased described him as a humble, obedient and God-fearing person who served the nation without fear or favour.

Walugembe urged Ugandans to emulate the habits of the deceased who never demanded a bribe from a person while in office in order to offer a service.
