Following public concerns about lighting along the Kampala-expressway, Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has assured the public that they have plans to light up the entire expressway to provide a safer and comfortable road user experience.

According to Allan Ssempebwa, manager media relations at UNRA currently, lighting along the Kampala-Entebbe expressway has been installed at junctions, toll plazas and along the existing road Mpala-Airport gate. The toll gates and plazas are all lit and security cameras installed.

"Lighting and installation of cameras along the entire expressway will be done under the operations and maintenance programme," he says.

"The procurement for this programme intended to pick a competent provider for tolling and maintenance has already commenced. We shall endeavour to update the public once this contractor has been selected."

He further notes that currently, the Uganda Police Force (Kampala Metropolitan Police) is maintaining regular mobile patrols along the facility to weed out the wrong elements and that this has significantly scaled down on the incidents recently reported in some sections of the media.

In June this year, two Uganda People's Defence Force soldiers were arrested on allegations of waylaying and robbing motorists at night.
