Kembabazi restaurant proprietor passes away

Eleanor Byarugaba Kembabazi, the proprietor of Kembabazi restaurant in Naguru, a Kampala suburb passed away on Friday at Entebbe International Airport.

The restaurateur who started the eatery that has over the years become synonymous with a variety of local cuisines succumbed to colon cancer immediately after returning from India where she had been taken to seek treatment.  

Kembabazi who together with her husband spent some time in Germany during Uganda's turbulent past opened the restaurant in 1983 to offer a variety of cuisines.

Over the years, her restaurant has become popular, patronised by Kampala's middleclass as a venue for parties, events, catering services, a spa, café, health club and saloon.

Those who knew Kembabazi claim she was introduced to the restaurant business while on her sojourn in Germany.

 It is no wonder that upon return, her first specialty was hamburgers and fries which were a novelty in Uganda.
