COURT

Soroti-Tables have turned, after a one 32-year-old Joseph Okwana who murdered his wife for failing to cook for him may now have to cook for himself and others for the next 15 years.

This is after he was sentenced to Luzira Upper Prison for murdering his wife Stella Akwi.

On a rational basis, prisoners are expected to prepare meals for themselves.
The High Court judge, David Batema, gave Okwana such a sentence after prosecution led by Arap Malinga, found him guilty.

The prosecution established that on August 9, 2018, Okwana murdered his wife, Akwi over alleged failure to cook food for him.

The incident happened in Amuge village of Acowa sub-county in Amuria district.

All the witnesses testified against Okwana. The first witness, Hellen Akello told court that while passing by Okwana's home, she heard Okwana beating the late, Akello. "I heard Okwana beating the late, Akwi and I ran to inform his brother, Elungat to rescue her," Akello said.

The second witness, Florence Asio, told court that on the same fateful day when the murder occurred, Okwana had vowed to murder Akwi over alleged failure to cook for him.

Through his lawyer, Charles Ariko, Okwana pleaded not guilty, saying that Akwi died after falling sick.

Batema, rubbished Okwana's defense on grounds that there was no medical document to show that Akwi was sick.

While reading the sentence, Batema told Okwana that cooking food is not the role for only women, but men can also do it.

"The court won't look as men kill women for not cooking food, but protect them by giving an exemplary penalty," Batema said.

The four years, one month and fourteen days that Okwana spent on remand were deducted from the sentence.
