ELECTIONS

BUGIRI- Elections for division chairpersons  and councillors have registered a low turn up at most polling stations in Bugiri Municipal Council.

There was a low turn up of voters at all the 28 polling stations within Bugiri municipal council by press time.

A presiding official at Bukooli Technical Inutstite, who preferred anonymity, said only 45 people out of the expected 567 voters had turned up to cast their ballot by 1:00pm.

He, however, said there was hope that more voters would turn up in big numbers, especially by the close of the voting time at 5:00pm.

Rashid Mugoya, a chapatti seller on the main highway in Bugiri Municipal Council, said he had ignored the elections to allow him time to prepare to cast his vote on July 27 for the post of Member of Parliament and mayor.
"I am just warming up for the main day when we are electing Member of Parliament and mayor," he said

The Bugiri returning officer, Chrisitine Kunihira, said voting materials arrived early enough to enable voters cast their ballot in time.

Kunihira said the voting process was going on smoothly except the issue of low voter turn up at almost all the 28 polling stations.

The district Police commander, Jeff Sebuyungo, said no major incidents had been reported in connection with the elections.

Sebuyungo urged voters to remain calm after casting their ballots and return back after the voting process to witness the counting of the ballots.

Eight people are contesting for the two positions of division chairpersons in Bugiri municipal council.

45 others are contesting for positions of directly elected and women councillors for eastern and western divisions in Bugiri Municipal Council.
