Golfers fight for national team slots

KAMPALA - Fourteen golfers take to the course on Monday to compete for ten slots that will form a team that will represent Uganda in the third edition of the Victoria Cup in Nairobi at the Vetlab Sports Club in Nairobi, July 25-28.
Uganda will be seeking to register their maiden win in the two-nation tournament that is akin to the Ryder Cup between teams from the US and Europe.
Kenya has won the past two editions, the first at Muthaiga Golf Club and the second in Entebbe last year where they edged Uganda by one and two points respectively.
Players like Ismail Muhamood, Becca Mwanja, David Kamulindwa, Ashraf Bagalana, Joel Basalaine, Edrine Okong Dennis Asaba, Herman Mutebi, Richard Baguma, Emma Ogwang and Davis Kato among others are expect to fight for places on the team that will also compete in the Zone IV Africa Golf Championships after the Victoria Cup, in Mombasa.
They will play 36 holes at Kitante and another 36 at Entebbe on Tuesday before the top ten over the legs join Coach Stephen Kasaija in camp ahead of the competitions.
On Friday 26 corporate companies took to the Kitante course to fundraise for the team. Over sh27m was collected after the one-day action dubbed the ‘Texas Scramble'.
Richard Baguma and Tony Katamba playing for NTV emerged the overall winners with 62nett while MSL Logistics' Charles Kareeba and Patrick Mugisha and AH Consulting's Hanninton Mpiima and Marvin Kagoro were second and third respectively after returning 63 and 64 nett respectively.
At the same function, Commercial Bank of Africa CEO Anthony Ndegwa donated a full set of uniforms to the Ugandan team.
