Hosts Russia pull off yet another incredible victory on home soil.

Live reporting by Joseph Kizza

   FULL TIME - Russia 3  Egypt 1

The final whistle has gone!

Russia are almost certainly into the knock-out stage. Celebrations across the country.

Egypt, on the other hand, are crestfallen and inconsolable.

Tears in Cairo.

Russia will be guaranteed a place in the last 16 and Egypt eliminated unless Saudi Arabia beat Uruguay on Wednesday.

Russia have four minutes to defy their critics.

There is definitely a sense of assuredness that they are through to the knock-out stage of this competition on home soil.

Impatient whistles are filling the entire stadium.

88min   Russia 3  Egypt  1

Egypt, even with the return of Mohamed Salah, have lacked the sort of creativity and invention that they so needed to make something out of this tie.

Russia are cruising to the knock-out stage.

85min   Russian fairytale, Egyptian nightmare

This is turning out into a fairytale for Russia, who last enjoyed such success at the World Cup in at the 1966 tournament - at the time as Soviet Union.

Egypt, in sharp contrast, will want to forget this return to this stage of football after a 28-year absence. They are headed for a second defeat in two group games, which should resign them to an early exit from the competition.

81min   First goal since 1990

By the way, that was Egypt's first goal at the World Cup since 1990.

Despite his side trailing, Salah will relish that particular goal, moreso considering this is his first World Cup appearance.

78min   SUBSTITUTION - Standing ovation for Dzyuba

He has impressed the home crowd and now goalscorer Artem Dzyuba, who netted Russia's third of the night, gets a standing ovation as he is substituted.

He acknowledges the warm gesture.

On comes 28-year-old Fedor Smolov.

  73min   GOAL! - Egypt

Salah will take this one.

The long-sleeved forward gets a hold of the ball, plants a kiss on it before purposefully placing it back down on the spot.

He looks comfortable.

He takes a few steps back and then tucks the ball into the roof of the net. Delicious one!

Russia 3  Egypt 1

71min   PENALTY! - Egypt

Egypt are awarded a penalty after Salah is clipped just inside the box.

Could this set Hector Cuper's men off to a course of a magical comeback?

  62min   GOAL! - Russia

It is getting embarrassing for Egypt! And it is, in all fairness, becoming an embarrassment of riches for the hosts.

How many more goals do they still have up their sleeves?

A long ball is floated in from the Russian end. Artem Dzyuba (shirt 22) chests it and turns to score his second goal of the tournament.

Altogether, Russia have scored eight goals so far.

Russia 3  Egypt 0

  59min   GOAL! - Russia

The hosts are running riot here!

Mario Fernandes makes a nifty turn on the edge, leaving his marker for dead. The 27-year-old then threads a pass to Denis Cheryshev, who slots home to send the home crowd wild.

Make that three goals for Cheryshev.

Russia 2  -  Egypt 0

55min   CLOSE! - Egypt

Egypt need a goal - and real quick at that.

Their main man Salah knows that all too well and he finds himself played in inside the box. He is heavily marked but still manages to turn but blasts wide.

50min   Five own goals - so far

That goal is the fifth own goal at this tournament so far.

Three of those have been by African teams.

47min:   GOAL! - Russia (own goal)

Oh goodness me! What calamity at the back!

Egypt's captain Ahmed Fathi turns the ball into his own net. The 33-year-old sticks out his leg to block an incoming cross from Golovin but instead deflects the effort past his own keeper.

An awful goal to concede!

Such misfortune!

Russia 1  Egypt 0

   KICKOFF! - Second half

We are underway for another 45 minutes of action.

Fans are anxious.

9:50pm   All square - for now

Can Hector Cuper and co find a goal in the second half? They need it desperately.

   HALF-TIME! - Russia 0  Egypt 0

That is it for this half. The two sides go into the break goalless.

Wonder what the coaches will tell their players.

41min   CLOSE! - Egypt

Now that's how lethal he can get!

Give Mohamed Salah some space and he will punish you.

An attack by Egypt sees the ball end on Marwan Mohsen, who dummies the ball. The rolling sphere gets to Salah inside the D. The Egyptian forward gives his minder Yury Zhirkov a hell of a time - twisting and turning to his favorite left and then letting rip.

The effort is good but goes wide. So close.

30min   Tight encounter

Russia started out of the blocks quicker than the Pharaohs but as the game has progressed, it has turned into a topsy-turvy affair.

One of the hosts' attack sees forward Artem Dzyuba drawing Egypt's defender Mohamed Abdel-Shafy into an aerial challenge.

But for all their efforts, this tight duel has seen no goal yet.

30min   OUCH! - Sorry ref!

Denis Cheryshev, during a Russia surge forward, blasts the ball in the path of referee Caceres.

The Paraguayan official cringes as he blocks the ball. It wasn't his own making, but it surely hurt a little!

   Still goalless

The crowd is doing a fantastic job in the stands. They want a game-changing goal though.

Who will draw first blood?

24min   Evenly poised tie

It has been a quiet evening for Mohamed Salah.

But for all those who know the threat that is the 26-year-old, only one moment for him can turn a tie around.

The Liverpool maestro scored five goals in five games during the World Cup qualifiers.

This is balanced affair, with both sides have their share of dangerous attacks.

20min   Russian crowd in full voice

Every time the Russians get a hold of the ball, the dominant home crowd bursts into life.

The first goal - for either side - will prove very important.

Egypt are wearing white and black while Russia have on a red-and-white outfit.

16min   CLOSE! - Egypt

Trezeguet is allowed to send a rasping effort from close range. Russia stattering at the moment. Egypt getting steadier and steadier.

Russia 0  Egypt 0

13min   First corner for Egypt

It is now going uphill for Egypt. The ship is getting steadied.

An attack towards the Russian goal has Ilya Kutepov trip Abdalla Said but the action ends with Egypt getting a corner.

Once the corner is swept into the box, Marwan Mohsen gets his head on it, and it is not good enough - but results into another corner.

10min   Egypt picking up

After a nervy start, Hector Cuper's men are beginning to find their footing.

In fact, it is now that we see Mohamed Salah having a feel of the ball. This is his World Cup debut, and his team needs him the most.

05min   CLOSE! - Russia

The hosts are in serious pursuit of an early goal inside this very effervescent Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Egypt are in trouble, as sloppy defending allows Aleksandr Golovin to steal the ball and test the goalkeeper with a long-range effort. It whistles past the post though.

03min   Egypt in shaky start

The first three minutes of this game have seen Egypt chasing shadows. They are living dangerously and almost pay for their sluggish start when Sergey Ignashevich creates himself some space in the box to head goalwards from an early corner for Russia.

It may be easy pickings for 29-year-old keeper Mohamed Elshenawy, but that is a sign of what the Pharaohs should expect.

KICKOFF! - First half under way

Referee Enrique Caceres of Paraguay blows his whistle to signal the start of the game.

Egypt get the ball rolling.

Game on!

8:56pm   Anthems

Let's have the anthems, shall we?

It is a vibrant atmosphere inside a packed Saint Petersburg Stadium tonight.

8:45pm   Here are the teams

Both teams have gone for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

8:28pm   Senegal secure Africa's first win

Earlier, after four of the five teams representing Africa at this World Cup lost their opening matches, all eyes on the continent were fixed on Senegal.

And the Lions of Teranga, captained by Liverpool star Sadio Mane, did not disappoint. They beat Poland 2-1 in their Group H clash earlier in the day.

Thiago Cionek's first-half own goal gave Senegal the lead. M'Baye Niang then capitalised on a defensive error to make it two, before Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled one back for Poland, but it was a little too late.

8:20pm   Hosts cruising, Pharaohs seek recovery

Russia, who are hosting this edition of football's most popular tournament, are looking to build on their impressive start on home soil - they beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opener.

Egypt, on the other hand, will seek redemption in what is seen as a do-or-die tie for them. It won't be easy for Hector Cuper and co, but they will have to give it their all.

The return of Salah on the starting lineup should do well to revitalise and boost their belief.

8:10pm   HE IS BACK!

Mohamed Salah is back!

The Liverpool star missed Egypt's opening match against Uruguay, as he struggled to recover from the shoulder injury he sustained during the Champions League final last month.

8:00pm   Welcome! Здравствуйте!

Hello and welcome again. I will be bringing you updates from tonight's match from Saint Petersburg Stadium.

From an African viewpoint, tonight's game is very, very important.

Egypt, having lost their opening match against Uruguay (0-1), know they must win tonight against hosts Russia to stand any reasonable chance of progressing.
