BETI KAMYA'S THANKSGIVING

KAMPALA- This guy always drops a bomb whenever he gets the mic at a social function. Maybe it is in his Deoxyribonucleic acid. What you call DNA. Maybe it is in his bone. But it is his nature.

Socialite Bryan White raised ears when he said: "I do wanna be remembered for sleeping with underage women" on Sunday.

The people who gathered at Alexander Mackay Church at Natete to join the minister for Kampala, Beti Kamya, in thanksgiving, including President Yoweri Museveni, were stirred alert in their seats after the ‘young money' jetsetter dropped the words.

Those who had missed the line started asking their neighbour…  "What did he say?" …. And then sat back, fighting laughter, disbelief written all over their faces — after the neighbour had repeated for them the socialite's words. Well, they were welcome to Bryan White.

His words bordered vulgarity, something you don't say in public, especially that it was a gathering of Bishops and laity who had come to pray. It was good to know the young man is not flirtatious and thigh monger.

He said he does not want to be remembered for throwing stones, striking or gambling. He wants to be remembered for helping young people reach their potential.

"The youth. We have to work. Not to wait on anybody," he said.

"We (youth) don't have to wait for the Government to help us. What can we bring to the table?"

And President Yoweri Museveni seemed to echo the socialite's words when he got the microphone later.

Museveni entreated the youth to work hard. He challenged Church leaders who ‘manipulate' young people, leading them into believing that God will solve all their needs. And that they don't have to work.

"Please stop this," said Museveni (to the clergy).

"God created man to exercise dominion over the earth. Man cannot be or behave like the birds in the sky. He has to work," said Museveni.

Bryan White contributed sh8m towards construction of the Martyrs' Church.

The new complex will all be glass — outside and inside. It will accommodate approximately 3,000 worshipers.

"It will be magnificent," said the head of laity, Daniel Kyazze.

"It has two levels (on its inside) Christians can sit."

The sh3.158b church is in memory of Mackay, a Presbyterian missionary to Uganda, who introduced the Anglican religion.

Beti Kamya welcomed Museveni and other guests to Natete. Her mother, Margaret Kamya, who was celebrating 85 years, was moved by the many people who turned up for her daughter's thanksgiving ceremony.

The celebrations coincided with Mother's Day and Judith Babirye charmed guests with her hit song Maama.
