MANAFWA - President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the Lirima Large Gravity Water Flow Scheme in Manafwa district.

The Lirima Large Gravity Water Flow Scheme, which will ensure that over 78,000 people in Namisindwa, Manafwa and Tororo districts have access to clean water, was commissioned on Sunday.

During the launch, the President urged residents around Mt Elgon to preserve the environment.

"I urge the people around Mt Elgon to desist from cutting the forests on the mountain slopes. The earth is our mother and the environment the clothing. Every time we destroy the environment, we are undressing our mother and this brings bad luck," Museveni said.

The initiative comes as a measure to mitigate effects of climate change, which has affected production of food and livestock farming. The President, therefore, emphasised that the water supply scheme will majorly support agriculture, little of the water going to domestic use.

"When this project is done, only 40% of the water will be for domestic use while the 60% will be for irrigation. This will help us overcome the weather changes and ensure food production throughout the year," he said.

Museveni assured the people that the water will be cheap, as there are not so many technicalities involed in putting up a gravity scheme.

"When this project is done, only 40% of the water will be for domestic use while the 60% will be for irrigation. This will help us overcome the weather changes and ensure food production throughout the year," the President said.

The President also toured stalls of exhibitors of small-scale manufacturers in the region. While there, Museveni emphasised the need to create wealth in order to improve household income as the country moves towards achieving middle-income status.

"I must also remind you about wealth creation. Use the four-acre model, where you plant coffee, fruits, pasture and rear livestock. For mountainous areas like Bugisu, you can make a lot of money by planting apples and grapes."
